On the 25th July 2020, Wild Mint Café was opened!

It gives me much pleasure to be able to welcome you here today.

For those who don’t know, Golden Days is a family business started by Stephen Evans, the Managing Director, in the early ’80s. I , Christine, came on board in the early days when we got married. Now our son Lawrence is also a Director and heads up the large and ever-growing online part of the Company. Our daughter Sarah, is also very much involved.

When the lockdown came in March members of the public could no longer enter the Garden Centre so the Concessionary businesses obviously had to close.

We continued to operate a home delivery service taking orders online and over the phone. This was no mean feat ! and only achieved thanks to the hard work of the dedicated core team of staff lead by the Manager, Juile Hepworth, and Stephen himself who hardly left the Centre for over 8 weeks!

By working from what must have felt dawn till dusk every day they managed to look after the plants which were no easy task in the unseasonable hot temperatures we enjoyed during April, source fresh supplies and handle the logistics of selecting, packing and delivering all the 1000s of orders we delivered to customers garden gates.

Indeed whilst supermarket shelves were being stripped bare of toilet rolls the centre was being stripped bare of over 10,000 tomato plants alone! not to mention huge numbers of other fruit and vegetable plants on top of vast quantities of bedding plants, shrubs, and over 10 full artic loads of compost and growbags.

It would be lovely to think that a love of gardening that has been awakened during the lockdown will continue as we all a just to a new normal.

Actually the Shevington Flower Show should have been held today but was canceled owing to the pandemic. We at Golden Days have supported and subsidized the show for over 25 years and it is lovely to see Ted Unwin the President and Eileen Longmore the Secretary of the Shevington Horticultural & Allotment Society here with us. I am hoping to see the Shevington Flower Show firmly back on the calendar next year.

Since the lifting of some of the restrictions, we have been able to reopen the centre shop to the public and gradually over the last few weeks the concessions, Maidenhead Aquatics, Pavers, Mountain Warehouse, The Works, Edinburgh Mill, Ponden Home etc have reopened. The restaurant will be the last and as you can see has been totally refurbished and has been rebranded as Wild Mint Cafe at Golden Days. We are proud to be officially reopening it today.

Sherrie Hewson, a celebrated actress who you will recognize from the many highly successful television programs and films she has stared in, is here today to cut the ribbon and declare Wild Mint Cafe at Golden Days officially open for business!!

Please give a warm welcome to Sherrie!!!
